    SN 1996cr, located in the Circinus Galaxy (3.7 Mpc, z ~ 0.001) was non-detected in X-rays at ~ 1000 days yet brightened to ~ 4 x 10^{39} erg/s (0.5-8 keV) after 10 years (Bauer et al. 2008). A 1-D hydrodynamic model of the ejecta-CSM interaction produces good agreement with the measured X-ray light curves and spectra at multiple epochs. We conclude that the progenitor of SN 1996cr could have been a massive star, M > 30 M_solar, which went from an RSG to a brief W-R phase before exploding within its ~ 0.04 pc wind-blown shell (Dwarkadas et al. 2010). Further analysis of the deep Chandra HETG observations allows line-shape fitting of a handful of bright Si and Fe lines in the spectrum. The line shapes are well fit by axisymmetric emission models with an axis orientation ~ 55 degrees to our line-of-sight. In the deep 2009 epoch the higher ionization Fe XXVI emission is constrained to high lattitudes: the Occam-est way to get the Fe H-like emission coming from high latitude/polar regions is to have more CSM at/around the poles than at mid and lower lattitudes, along with a symmetric ejecta explosion/distribution. Similar CSM/ejecta characterization may be possible for other SNe and, with higher-throughput X-ray observations, for gamma-ray burst remnants as well.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures.     Expanding the Role of Criterion A2 in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

    Posttraumatic stress disorder is a psychiatric construct that refers to symptoms that may follow exposure to a traumatic event. The current definition of a traumatic event differentiates between the objective event, criterion A1, and an individual’s subjective response, criterion A2. This study investigated the importance of criterion A2 and other intense negative emotions in the development of PTSD. Self-report measures were used to determine the presence or absence of the event criteria A1 and A2, PTSD symptoms, and intensity of emotion type at the time of an event. Criterion A2 emotions at the time of the event were associated with higher levels of PTSD symptoms regardless of the presence or absence of an A1 event. Consistent with previous literature, non-criteria A1 events were associated with higher ratings of PTSD symptoms compared to criteria A1 events. Finally, in addition to the peritraumatic emotion of fear, peritraumatic guilt also significantly predicted PTSD symptom intensity

    Physiological and genetic control of water stress tolerance in zoysiagrass

    Significant cultivar difference in many water stress responses of zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica (Steud.) and Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr.) are shown in this study. Of the four cultivars, Palisades was the most water stress tolerant, had the most negative turgor loss point, and leaf rolled after loss of full turgor pressure. On the other end of the spectrum, Diamond was the least water stress tolerant, had the lowest full turgor pressure, the least negative turgor loss point, and leaf rolled at full turgor. Differences between Diamond, Cavalier, Palisades, and DALZ 8504 in leaf rolling, loss of full turgor, water release curve parameters, root characteristics and gene expression make zoysiagrass a prime candidate for further investigation into the mechanisms of water stress avoidance/tolerance. Enhanced antioxidant activity and stomatal control, along with root characteristics, most likely explain the cultivar difference in water stress tolerance of zoysiagrass. Palisades and DALZ 8504 maintained full turgor for significantly longer than Diamond and Cavalier, which may be associated with root characteristics and/or enhanced stomatal control as only those two cultivars showed enhanced expression of a stomatal control gene (phospholipase D). The apparent response (most apparent in turgid weight/dry weight ratios (TWDW)) of well watered plants to water stressed neighbor plants will likely be the most novel finding of this study. Well watered zoysiagrass and Kentucky bluegrass responded to water stressed neighbors by reducing TWDW. Significant increases in gene expression of a systemin degrading enzyme and of an integral membrane protein (signal receptor) were also observed in well watered plants. Results from this study indicate that this phenomenon is occurring and expose a dearth in scientific understanding that must be filled. Improving water stress tolerance through breeding for parameters like those discussed in this paper (delayed leaf rolling or loss of full turgor, enhanced stomatal control, enhanced antioxidant activity, deep rooting characteristics, etc.) may very likely produce turfgrasses that can survive and maintain desired aesthetic qualities using significantly less water

    Chandra/HETGS Observations of the Capella System: the Primary as a Dominating X-ray Source

    Using the Chandra/High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (hereafter HETGS) we have detected Doppler motion of Capella's X-ray emission lines in the 6 -- 25AA wave-band. The observed motion follows the expected orbital motion of Capella's primary. This finding implies that the primary G8 III star, not the secondary G1 III star in the Hertzsprung gap, has been the dominant source of hot 10^{6.8} -- 10^{7}K plasma at least in the last six years. In addition, the results demonstrate the long-term stability of the HETGS and demonstrate small uncertainties of 25 and 33 km/s in the velocity determination with the HEG and MEG, respectively.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Astrophysical Journal Letter

    Spectral element methods are high-order weighted residual techniques for partial differential equations that combine the geometric flexibility of finite element methods with the rapid convergence of spectral techniques. Spectral element methods are described for the simulation of incompressible fluid flows, with special emphasis on implementation of spectral element techniques on medium-grained parallel processors. Two parallel architectures are considered: the first, a commercially available message-passing hypercube system; the second, a developmental reconfigurable architecture based on Geometry-Defining Processors. High parallel efficiency is obtained in hypercube spectral element computations, indicating that load balancing and communication issues can be successfully addressed by a high-order technique/medium-grained processor algorithm-architecture coupling
